                               Animal Osteopath - Katie Popplewell.

                                                   Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a manual therapy which has been used to alleviate many different joint problems. Osteopathy aims to not only alleviate many symptoms but also ascertain the root of the problem. Therefore the primary cause of the problem as well as any secondary compensatory problems can be treated resulting in long term healing.
Animals can suffer from joint discomfort and musculoskeletal dysfunction resulting in loss of performance, poor performance, a change in gait balance and even lameness. Animals respond very well to treatment as they are able to agjust to the treatment quickly and are able to re-establish their usual mechanical function.
The British Equine Veterinary Association is currently working alongside the Society of Osteopaths in Animal Practice in order to establish a register of approved osteopathic animal practitioners. The masters level qualification that I hold means that I will be included on this list.

About Katie Popplewell -

I graduated in 2003 with a degree in Animal Science (Equine) from Imperial College at  I then went on to complete a degree in Osteopathic Medicine from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007.Since then I have set up my own business treating both people and animals. In April 2010 I graduated from the University of Wales with a Masters level degree in Animal Manipulation (osteopathic pathway.
My experience with animals spans many years. My interest in horses and dogs specifically has been of important since an early age. Having owned horses and dogs myself I have taken part in training, competitions and care for these animals. I have completed British Horse Society exams and also taken part in an overseas work scheme which allowed me to be involved in preparing yearlings for a high standard race sale in Canada.
I take part in agility competitions with my rescue dog and I’m hoping to start some Canix training soon.
I have been fortunate to work alongside and to observe some of the leading Osteopaths in the country. I have observed horses being treated under general anaesthetic and sedation and been able to palpate the animal in these situations. I have treated horses from local pony clubs and hack horses to 3* rated event horses.
I have treated many pet dogs as well as competition dogs. I have also been involved in a ‘check up’ for hunt hounds.
