We have been very pleased with the free geriatric health checks scheme and therefore intend to continue it.

We have significantly improved the quality of life of a number of older pets with previously unidentified health problems and have also been able to reassure a number of owners that their pet is in good health and enjoying their old age!!

A quick reminder of the details: the scheme is aimed at dogs over 8 years and cats over 10 years.  Simply bring your pet to normal consulting hours on any Thursday and tell us that you would like a free geriatric health check – It’s that simple!  

It is well documented that people are living longer - Our pets are too!  This increase in lifespan brings with it a host of problems that are seen less commonly in younger animals, for example: Arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems and kidney disease.

Unfortunately it is still a common misconception amongst pet owners that old dogs that are slowing down, stiffening up and even going lame are not in pain - How can this be the case?  Many of us know a person who is affected by arthritis and it is an extraordinarily painful condition.  Cats also suffer arthritis but in addition to this, thyroid and kidney problems are common too.  Both of these conditions can cause muscle loss and lethargy.  If you have an old cat who is losing weight this is not a necessary or normal part of aging and may be an indicator of disease.

We are keen to ensure that all the pets under our care are in the best possible health and have a good quality of life.
